Soundproofing with plasterboard: understanding the options
A noisy neighbour, a home office next to a bedroom, a partition that seems to hide nothing: acoustics is a recurring subject during interior renovation. Plasterboard on a metal frame offers several solutions, provided the components that actually drive performance are put together properly.

What "sound insulation" really means
A wall or partition never blocks noise completely: it attenuates it. Two main families of nuisance behave differently and are not treated the same way:
- Airborne noise (voices, TV, music), which travels through the air and then makes the wall vibrate;
- Impact noise (footsteps, dropped objects, knocks), which travels first through the structure of the building.
A plasterboard partition mainly deals with airborne noise between two rooms. Impact noise coming from the floor above generally has to be tackled at the floor itself.
The three levers behind performance
An acoustic partition, regardless of brand, always relies on the same logic: mass, absorption and decoupling.
Mass
The heavier a wall, the more it dampens vibration. Doubling the board, using denser boards or adding layers all act on this parameter.
Absorption inside the cavity
Between the two board faces, mineral wool absorbs part of the acoustic energy. An insulation designed for acoustic use, correctly sized and installed without compression, plays a real role in the final outcome.
Decoupling
If the two faces of the partition are rigidly connected, sound travels through the contact points. That is the principle behind specific frame types (staggered studs, independent frames) and the resilient perimeter strips, which limit sound transmission through the structure.
Common plasterboard systems
Standard distribution partition
A simple metal frame, one board on each side, insulation inside: this is the baseline partition used to split a space. Its main purpose isn't acoustic, but it already provides some attenuation compared with a hollow partition or an uninsulated wall.
High-performance acoustic partition
Same principle, but with upgraded components: specific boards (often identified by a dedicated colour or product line in manufacturers' catalogues), suitable studs, acoustic-grade insulation. It is used where a partition separates sensitive rooms (bedroom / living room, bedroom / office).
Direct-bonded dry lining
The "quick" lining: a board pre-bonded to insulation, glued straight onto the existing wall. Its main benefit is thermal. Acoustically, its effect is limited, largely because it remains solidly attached to the supporting wall.
Metal-stud lining (secondary wall)
A metal frame is set up in front of the existing wall, filled with mineral wool, then closed with one or more boards. Depending on how the frame is fixed, the lining is more or less decoupled from the original wall. In renovation, this is often the best compromise when the existing wall cannot be demolished.
Independent (decoupled) secondary wall
The frame is not fixed to the supporting wall: it stands on the floor and, where relevant, at the ceiling, with resilient strips at the perimeter. The new wall is effectively "suspended" independently from the original one. It is generally the most effective system for tackling a noisy party wall, at the cost of a few extra centimetres of thickness.
Weak points to watch out for
The performance of an acoustic partition is decided largely at its weak points. An excellent system with a poor detail can end up behaving like a much simpler one.
- The perimeter: floor, wall and ceiling junctions. Resilient strips, acrylic joints and sealing close off air leaks — and therefore sound leaks.
- Sockets and switches: two recessed boxes fitted back-to-back between two rooms create a direct acoustic bridge. Offsetting them or using acoustic-rated boxes matters.
- Doors: an excellent acoustic partition combined with a standard cupboard-style door will still let sound through. The door assembly must match the intended performance.
- Service penetrations: ventilation ducts, air-conditioning pipework, plumbing runs. Each hole creates an opening that must be sealed with a suitable product.
- Jointing quality: poorly finished tape joints, open gaps, boards not firmly screwed to the frame all degrade the result.
New build vs renovation: different logic
In new build or a full renovation, the best approach is to bring the acoustic question into the design stage: choice of partitions, layout of sensitive rooms, treatment of slab/partition junctions, position of technical services. In a lighter renovation, work is usually additive: a lining in front of an existing wall, a localised acoustic upgrade, a targeted treatment of a party wall. The system is then chosen based on available space, room use and the site next door.
Where this step fits on site
Drywall work sits between the technical services (electrics, plumbing, ventilation, refrigerant piping) and the finishing trades (preparation, painting, flooring). Changing an acoustic partition after the paint stage is expensive; deciding too late that a ventilation duct or a socket must go through the wall can ruin the sealing. Fitting a plasterboard partition is not out of reach of a skilled DIYer, but the gap between "looks clean" and "actually works acoustically" is significant. Choosing the right system, sizing the insulation, handling the tricky details and coordinating with the other trades (electrics, ventilation, plumbing) is what really drives the outcome. A site visit is the best way to check what is actually suitable: the nature of the supporting wall, the available thickness, the routing constraints.
